The Founder

James R. Remuzzi is the president of Nature Works, a professional land management company with offices in Shepherdstown, WV and Morgantown, WV. James founded Nature Works after founding and running Sustainable Solutions, LLC a natural resource management company for 20 years providing natural resource consulting and management services to private landowners, forestry associations, conservation buyers, non profits, NGO’s, investors, and State and Federal agencies. James R. Remuzzi

James grew up on a farm in Clarks Gap, Virginia that raised grass fed beef and timber and as a child was most happy in the woods and fields. He has degrees in Forest Technology and Environmental Science from the University of New Hampshire. Prior to founding Sustainable Solutions, his experience was based largely in the private sector, where he worked as a member of the planning team for the Chesapeake Forests Project, and then as a Forestry Tech for the project responsible for inventorying, monitoring, and prescribed fire on over 60,000 acres of forestland on Maryland and Virginia’s Eastern Shore. While on the Shore, James was a member of the management team that underwent a successful dual SFI/FSC forest certification audit of 25,000 acres of the Chesapeake Forest project lands.
James is a West Virginia Licensed professional forester and an expert in ecosystem services and their markets and conservation technology. In collaboration with the Pinchot Institute for Conservation, he was the architect and lead developer of the Bay Bank, an ecosystem marketplace for the Chesapeake Bay and LandServer, an innovative first of it’s kind mapping tool. James was also a member of the development team for the Texas Coastal Exchange.
An accomplished public speaker, James has presented on Ecosystem Services and their markets, Sustainable Forestry, and Prescribed Fire at over 100 conferences on ecosystems services across the United States, and is a guest lecturer at University of Maryland and New York University.
James has extensive training and certifications through the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG), and is a certified burn manager in Maryland, Virginia, and Georgia. He is passionate about prescribed fire and has served as a Burn Boss on over 8000 acres of prescribed fire in a variety of fuel types across six states and on private, state, county, non profit, and federal lands.
In 2007, James was selected as a Kinship Conservation Fellow and served on the Kinship advisory board for two years. In 2024, James was selected by the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program to be in the first GS10ksb cohort in West Virginia
James currently leads the Nature Works team to provide sustainable forestry, invasive plant control, native meadow and grassland management, prescribed fire planning, permitting, and implementation, and hazardous fuel reduction for Private, County, State, Federal, and Non Profit clients across the Mid and North Atlantic.
He is an accomplished outdoorsman who has spent 25+ years hiking, biking, running canyoneering, skiing, snowboarding, climbing, and paddling across a variety of countries, states, and ecosystems. In 2000, he was a member of a self guided team that summited Denali via the Washburn route. He lives in Shenandoah Junction WV in a farmhouse built in 1840 with his wife, two daughters, 7 goats, 4 chickens, and a cattle dog named Roo.

Michael Donovan
Mike grew up in Loudoun County, Virginia and always enjoyed working outside. Mike is an accomplished entrepreneur, and a highly skilled equipment operator. Prior to joining Nature Works, Mike was a commercial fisherman on the West Coast and in Alaska for 17 years. If it is a machine or has hydraulics, he can run it. Mike finds our Forest Restoration work to be the most rewarding and impactful work that we do. He lives in Middleburg, VA with his wife, two sons, and two dogs.

Fiona Harrison
Fiona was born in California, graduated from Humboldt State University with a degree in Natural Resources, and has always loved the outdoors, nature, camping, and hiking. She worked all over the west as a park ranger for the National Park Service, the USDA Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and California State Parks. In her other life, she is the Market Manager for the Charles Town, WV Farmers Market and volunteers at various community events. She is an avid runner, and her favorite place on the planet is the desert. As Office Manager, she oversees all things administrative, helps keeps the team organized and on track, and keeps the office plants alive.

Bradley Morrison
Bradley was born and raised in Charles Town, WV. He graduated with a biology degree from Shepherd University, specializing in ecology. Bradley has a passion for working with nature to restore and maintain our ecosystems. In his spare time, he enjoys birding, hiking, and sports. At Nature Works, Bradley is tasked with applying strategies and methods to meet management goals. In his future, he is looking to continually learn and expand his skills with Nature Works.

George Hoover
George is a West Virginia native, born in Brandywine, WV. George grew up on a farm, is a certified welder, and is a jack-of-all-trades and master-of-several. A professional ironworker for 19 years, George hung Iron up and down the East coast. After retiring from ironwork, he built houses for five years. At Nature Works he helps out in many big and little ways and keeps our headquarter buildings and fleet of specialized trucks and equipment going strong.
Sam Gardner
A Northern Virginia native, Sam is a passionate forester and conservationist. Sam directs all aspects of the Nature Works Morgantown Office and has planned & implemented restoration and conservation treatments across several thousand acres. Sam is a certified pesticide applicator in WV, VA, PA, and MD, and holds degrees in forestry from Allegany College of Maryland & West Virginia University. Previously, Sam worked for the Maryland Forest Service. Sam is also an NWCG-certified Wildland Firefighter Type I and a licensed Maryland EMT. After 5pm, you can usually find Sam hiking, hunting, or gardening.

Annie Henderson
Annie is a new resident of Shepherdstown, WV after moving from Cedar Falls, IA. While in Iowa, she graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in Recreation, Tourism, and Nonprofit Leadership and a minor in Earth Science. Annie has a variety of experiences such as working with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and interning at Antietam National Battlefield. These work experiences helped her realize her passion for restoring ecosystems and preserving natural resources. In her free time, Annie enjoys camping, fishing, and playing rugby. At Nature Works, she is looking forward to expanding her knowledge of GIS/mapping, invasive species control, and prescribed burn operations.

Christopher Timothy
Born and raised in Northern Virginia, Christopher first connected with the outdoors through landscape photography. Time living in the Southwest expanded his sense of place and climate, and learning from Navajo approaches to land stewardship strengthened his devotion to restoring what's been lost. At James Madison University (B.S., Geography), he saw how often real conservation was missing from the picture.
Through these experiences, along with work for the Virginia chapter of The Nature Conservancy and study in Aerial Analysis at the University of Malta, he now centers on mapping, drone imaging, and restoration that puts ecosystems first.
Ethan Hilgeman
Ethan, a Western Maryland native, has an associates degree in forest technology from Allegany College of Maryland and is a Spring 2025 graduate of West Virginia University with his BS in Forest Resource Management. Ethan brings a dedicated work ethic and a passion for the outdoors to his work. At Nature Works, Ethan is tasked with leading day-to-day crew works, while completing his other field-based duties. In his time outside of work he enjoys traveling, hiking, camping, and rock climbing.

Mathew Recker
Matthew is a second-year intern with Nature Works. He grew up in Ashland, Ohio, and is currently in his senior year at WVU studying Forest Resource Management. He hopes to work to restore and preserve natural areas for future generations to use and appreciate. In his spare time, Matthew enjoys reading, writing, hiking, and backcountry canoe trips.
